Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to the bonding of materials with adhesives on canvas and sail products. Work may be conducted in a variety of environments, such as:operational indoor workplacesoperational outdoor workplaceshazardous or exposed conditionsWork may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision. Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare work area
  • Safe working environment is established
  • Suitable electrical power outlets are identified, if required
  • Work is sequenced to maximise safety and productivity
  • Workplace procedures and instructions are read and interpreted
       
Element: Select, use and store tools
  • Appropriate hand tools, power tools and electrical equipment are obtained for the work to be performed
  • Tools are examined for damage, missing components or other defects (including frayed power cords where applicable)
  • Extension power cables are checked for knots and insulation damage
  • Electrical tools are connected safely to power supply
  • Safety equipment is used during tool operation in accordance with OHS practices
  • Tasks are performed using tools in accordance with safe working practices
  • Tools are located in a safe position when not in use
  • Tools and extension cords are cleaned and stored in accordance with industry and enterprise safe working practices

  • Nature of materials to be joined is ascertained
  • Specified adhesives are obtained
  • Appropriate tools and materials are selected for preparation of work piece surfaces and application of adhesive
  • Adhesive manufacturer's OHS requirements are checked and prescribed precautions taken before adhesives are used
  • Adhesive is prepared to manufacturer's instructions
       
Element: Apply adhesive and bond materials
  • Work piece surfaces are prepared for application of adhesive
  • Work piece surfaces to be bonded are anchored or otherwise stabilised
  • Adhesive is applied in accordance with recommended practice and surfaces are joined
  • Joins are allowed to cure for specified time
  • Where appropriate, heat to assist in curing the joins is applied to the work piece in accordance with OHS practices
  • Knowledge of using adhesives are applied to perform required tasks
       
Element: Inspect and rectify
  • Work piece is removed and joins are informally inspected and tested for strength
  • Results of informal inspection are verified by supervisor and appropriate action is taken regarding rework or rectification, if necessary
       
Element: Clean up and documentation
  • Product is prepared for inspection
  • Work area is cleaned and tools and equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with OHS practices
  • Remaining adhesive is safely disposed of or stored in a safe, secure location
  • Work records are completed in accordance with workplace requirements
